Persian Khanjar

This all-silver Khanjar is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, encapsulating centuries of tradition and artistry. The hilt and scabbard are entirely inscribed with a geometric and foliage pattern reminiscent of ancient Persian motifs. The forged 6.5" blade is high-contrast wootz. A large ruby is set in the hilts pommel. 12” overall. Early 19th century. Excellent condition. Museum quality.

The origin of this style of Khanjar is unknown but several potential location have been suggested, including Persia, India, Baluchistan, Afghanistan and Oman. Dr. Robert Elgood attributes the example included in The Arms and Armour of Arabia in the 18th-19th and 20th centuries (p. 88 fig. 9.18) to Persia. Another example in the MET collection (accession # 36.25.1052a, b) acquired at the bequest of George C. Stone is attributed to India.
