Yataghan
ITEM # 0009
The Yataghan is a distinctive and iconic sword that traces its origins back to the Ottoman Empire. Characterized by its distinctively curved blade and unique hilt design, the yataghan served as both a weapon and a status symbol among Ottoman soldiers and elites. Its design was optimized for close combat, featuring a single-edged blade with a pronounced curve, ideal for slashing maneuvers. Hilts typically feature distinctive grips and ornate decoration, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic flair of Ottoman artisans.
This example has massive "elephant ear" shaped grips, a gilt copper grip strap decorated with ribbed red corals and brass bolsters (a later replacement). The 22" well-forged blade is slightly down curving, has a single fuller and is decorated with silver inlay on one side and on the other side a series of chiseled panels containing old Turkish calligraphy. The chiseled side bears the date AH 1221 (1806 CE). The fabric-over-wood scabbard has a large brass locket and chape, both of which have chiseled calligraphy filled panels similar to those found on the chiseled side of the blade. Good condition. Overall length: 29.5".
The yataghan's versatility and aesthetic appeal ensured its enduring popularity, both on the battlefield and as a symbol of prestige and tradition in Ottoman society. Even today, the yataghan remains a celebrated artifact, revered for its historical significance and enduring legacy in martial culture.
