Red Sea Region Jambiya
ITEM # 0014 The mountain region of western Yemen is dominated by the towering peaks of the Sarawat Mountains. With its rugged terrain, distinctive architecture and close-knit communities this region offers a glimpse into Yemen's rich history and traditional way of life. This large and magnificent Jambiya is in a style not frequently encountered but is believed to have originated in the Western mountain region. The hilt and scabbard are all silver widely curved and terminated with an oversized thum. It is elaborately pierced and chased and further decorated with granulation and applied filigree. 22" overall, 11" blade. Excellent condition. A rare and stunning example. For a similar example (knife only) see: - Elgood, Robert, The Arms and Armour of Arabia in the 18th-19th and 20th centuries (London, 1994), p. 76 fig. 9.14.
