ITEM # 0026The Yataghan is a distinctive and iconic sword that traces its origins back to the Ottoman Empire. Characterized by its distinctively curved blade and unique hilt design, the yataghan served as both a weapon and a status symbol among Ottoman soldiers and elites. Its design was optimized for close combat, featuring a single-edged blade with a pronounced curve, ideal for slashing maneuvers. Hilts typically feature distinctive grips and ornate decoration, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic flair of Ottoman artisans.
This example has larger that usual "elephant ear" shaped grips. The gilt grip strap and blosters are elaborately inscribed and decorated with red corals. The blade is beautifully forged, bi-fullered and slightly down curving.. Each side is inlaid with large gold cartouche, one of which includes the date AH 1229 (1814 CE). Very good condition. No scabbard. Overall length: 29", blade: 23".
