Tihama style Jambiya
ITEM # 0032 The Tihama region, situated along the western coast of Yemen, is a place of captivating beauty and cultural significance. Jambiya originating from this region vary in style dependending upon locale but are usually characterized by a large and extravagent silver scabbard. This is a massive example, and an older one. It is 19" overall with an 8" forged blade. The hilt and scabbard are both low silver (a common practice prior to WWI and the advent of oil). Good condition with the expected wear for an antique of this age. ca. 1900. This is a large, impressive and hard to find early example of a Tihama Jambiya. For an almost identical example see Elgood, Robert, The Arms and Armour of Arabia in the 18th-19th and 20th centuries (London, 1994), p. 76 fig. 9.15.
