Moroccan Genoui
ITEM # 0048 The Moroccan Genoui is a traditional weapon of the Berber people that inhabit the Atlas mountains. While Moroccan in origin, its use was widespread throughtout much of North Africa. Hilts are typically of wood or horn and their blades are often the repurposed tips of much older European Rapier blades. This example can be dated to 1903 by the coin at the top of the pommel. It has a lightly inscribed brass scabbard and includes a baldric. The hilt is polished wood and the blade tip is from an older European Rapier. 19" overall. Recently restored. Good condition. For a similar example see Claude, Eric, The Small Catalog of Moroccan and Algerian Edged Weapons (France, 2020) pp. 92-93.
